So as you know I have basically run out of rooms to makeover and reno in my house. They are all done and dusted and we are now at the boring maintenance stage of simply refreshing the paint and cleaning the walls etc….BORING!
So I have been making the most of my sisters house to unleash my creativity on. Her bathroom needed some loving but they didn’t have the budget at this stage for a complete reno so they decided to just paint it white to make it feel lighter and brighter. Problem was it had some ‘interesting’ tiling features which made it feel dated and….well basically there was so much going on you didn’t know where to look! They were all over the place, in all different styles and different raised levels.
I had been following Vinyl Home for some time now and seen some amazing DIY projects done with their stick on tiles. They had approached me in the past to work together but at the time I didn’t have any projects on the go where I could utilise their amazing range until now. I knew these would be perfect for my sisters bathroom to help cover up those dated tiled features and I was so excited to give them a go!
So we got to work. Ultimate sister duo team and smashed it out. I was on measuring and cutting whilst she placed the tile sheets. It was super easy to do and only took us a few hours. There were some troublesome spots due to all the different raised levels of the existing tiles and how they were boxed in in multiple boxes so the finish wasn’t exactly perfect but it was a vast improvement to what it was originally.
Now this is where the planned project was supposed to be complete…all that needed to be done was install the new vanity and mirror that they had purchased and we could take some after after photos and VOILA! Gorgeous fresh modern feeling bathroom and I was to have some great before and afters to share with you all to inspire you on ways to makeover areas of your home on a budget.
But things don’t always go to plan…and thats a major part in all reno work. You discover issues along the way that you didn’t know existed.
So whilst we were laying the Vinyl Home sticky back tile sheets we were struggling to get them to stick properly to the one area next to her shower. We soon discovered that they had a slow leak in the plumbing behind the wall next to the shower. the original tiles and wall had moisture in them which is why they wouldn’t stick. Unfortunately all our work had to be ripped out and the whole gib wall was taken down for the plumbing to be fixed. On the positive side, without us doing that wall with the Vinyl Tiles they likely wouldn’t have discovered that leak until it was much much worse which would have resulted in damage to the floor and the kitchen behind the bathroom.
The positive that came out of that was that all the mismatched ugly tiles that were originally there were ripped out with the wall (along with all our Vinyl Tiles we worked so hard on laying argggh) but they were able to retile that wall from scratch.
So with some fresh white paint, their newly tiled wall (which wasn’t in the original plan and budget but ya know, thats typical reno life), a new vanity, an awesome kmart mirror and the Vinyl Home stick on subway tiles on the other walls tile feature to tie it all together seamlessly – their bathroom was complete!
If you have an area that you need to tile or change up but not ready to do a full retile this is the option for you!
