I always find myself pottering around in the kids room, updating their linen and decor as they grow up always trying to improve the spaces for them with mini bedroom makeovers. Lately I have had an itch to get stuck into my bedroom. It was Mumma’s turn to give herself her very own sanctuary. I was over the dark feature wall, It always had a layer of dust on it and I just felt it was time to freshen up the space and make it feel lighter and brighter for the addition of a little baby into our space.
Here is a “before” shot and if you want to quickly see a few more angles of the ‘before’ look you click here scroll down a bit in this post.
Of course I find myself tackling a complete mini room makeover at 36 weeks pregnant…as you do right? I didn’t want to spend a lot – I never do when I am updating and making changes. I like to use what we have and create something magical on a tight budget!
Here is what I did:
I started with painting the feature wall. I just painted over it the same colour as the rest of the room (Resene Geyser, possibly half or quarter strength?) That made the world of difference and suddenly the room felt twice the size with a completely different ambiance.
My bedroom furniture was also looking a little worse for wear. The vinyl on the top was peeling off in places from my previous makeover a few years ago and the leather handles had changed colour over the years to a very orangey colour so I decided to give all pieces a third lease on life. We bought our bedroom furniture 9 years ago and I have have now given them two makeovers in that time giving them completely new looks, hardly costing us a cent and removing the need to go out and buy a whole new set of furniture every time I update our bedroom.
I peeled off the marble vinyl and sanded back the top of the bedside tables till I got down to the raw wood. I sealed this with the wood sealer that I bought for the nursery furniture. It creates a waterproof seal without changing the colour of the wood or adding any shine to it. We then made some wooden handles and just like that they were completely transformed.
With our large set of drawers I never did love the edging on the top. It had sharp points and grooves and just didn’t fit in with my style or match the bedside tables properly and the pointed corner also would always hit our wardrobe door when we opened it so we had a constant hole in the door. We decided to chop the whole top off this one to remove those corners and replace it with a solid thicker block of pine wood to match the bedsides. I think the wooden top cost us around $50 from Mitre 10 and then I just sealed it as I did the bedside tables and we added the matching handmade handles.
I fell in love with the pendant lights from Lighting Direct and they were my big ‘splurge’ for the mini makeover. I think they cost about $80 each as we held out until they were on sale but they were the original inspiration for the fresh ‘new look’ so I had planned everything around them.
After I had touched up and painted over the feature wall, done the work to the furniture and had the lights installed I got an email from Logan and Mason about working together in a collaboration with their new season range. WHAT PERFECT TIMING!
Last time they contacted me I treated my sister to a whole new bedroom makeover as a wee house warming present using their gorgeous bedding, cushions and throws. (much to hubbys’ delight as he was very jealous and wanted the new duvet cover for himself as he wasn’t a fan of the one we had) You can see that makeover post here.
I was so excited to be able to finish off our makeover with brand new bedding and cushions to match the new feel and atmosphere of the room. This just transformed the space even more making a beautiful new sanctuary for myself to enjoy and have a place to sneak away to to escape the madness of the kids or to simply lie back and relax in whilst enjoying newborn cuddles. Those nesting hormones were also very satisfied with having the walls and furniture and everything in between squeaky clean before bringing a baby into the space.
