Getting my kids to earn their keep around the place has been something we have done from day one. I mean it’s hard work running around after these wee minions we pop out, so we may as well put them to good use!
With Kylan it started with simple things like helping tidy up his toys once he had finished playing, tidying up his room at the end of the day with me or even helping hang out the washing. These simple things that we started grew with him as he got older and he now has a list of chores and standard everyday jobs/expectations which we expect from him everyday to help us out around the house. We try and teach him how we are a family and we all work together to help out. I certainly am not a maid and nobody should expect me to be cleaning up after them all day long!
He’s gone from me helping to tidy his room to him keeping it tidy and cleaning it up everyday all by himself. Helping with the washing has turned into him putting his dirty clothes in the washing basket (not on the floor next to it like hubby does!) and the clean folded piles I leave in his room get put in their allocated spots in the wardrobe. Whilst these chores just began as small ways to help out, as Kylan grew up he got more and more responsibilities which he actually enjoyed. These special jobs make them feel important and at the same time teaches them life lessons. If Kylan keeps up what I have drilled into him from day one he is going to have one very lucky wife one day!
We introduced sticker charts as a reward system when he was about 3 or 4 which encouraged him to do his extra little jobs as well as his every day jobs such as getting ready, making his bed etc. When he out grew the fascination with stickers we turned to pocket money. From memory this coincided with around the time he started asking for things from the shops so it was a great way to teach him how to earn his money and save for something that he wants and that the card mummy has isn’t just a magic card that gets you whatever you want whenever you want it.
I have been so slack from the start with pocket money. I tell him I will get some cash out and I end up forgetting. I tell him I will pay him back and I would forget. Seriously who carries cash these days. He had no interest in me putting it in his bank account, he wanted to see it in his money box so he could count it and watch it grow!
My life just changed for the better a few weeks back thanks to the genius people at ASB…I can’t say the same thing about my bank account now though. Clever Kash arrived on our door step for Kylan to test out and it is seriously the coolest thing ever (and I’m not just saying that because they sent it to us to trial!).
The lucky little bugger arrived home to this amazing package after school…we all get excited about packages on our door step but when you are 7 you can only imagine the joy and excitement!
Pocket money payment just got a whole lot easier, chores are now being done without me even asking as the instant gratification of seeing his pocket money balance go up at the end of each week is all the encouragement he needs…and I have even given Kylan a few more responsibilities which makes my life easier! I hate emptying the dishwasher so I have happily allocated that chore to my little minion in exchange for his $5 a week!
So meet Clever Kash!
Kylan took over my Snapchat when we were allowed to share him with the world to tell everyone all about it! It was too cute not to include on here!
Isn’t he so ridiculously cute…and he’s pretty clever too!
It is so easy to use. All you need to do is login to your ASB banking app…..
You can then transfer however much you plan on transferring into your child’s account.
Go into your child’s account which you have linked to your Clever Kash and click ‘update Clever Kash’ and it will search for your little elephant.
Once they find each other you can see the money that you have transferred into their account sitting there waiting to be put into your Clever Kash. This is a fun part for the kids as they get to swipe the money into their elephant!
You swipe the money upwards and you can see how much you have…
And once you have swiped it all up it updates and the kiddies can check their new balance on their Clever Kash.
Amazing right. If you haven’t already you need to order yours today. Visit www.asb.co.nz/cleverkash for more information. This post is in collaboration with ASB however all views and opinions are my own.
Hopefully after reading this you have got some ideas about how to get your own little minions to work and learn the value of a dollar whilst getting some jobs taken off your hands! YAY TO NOT HAVING TO UNPACK THE DISHWASHER!
