Spring is here (not that you would think so after this week’s temperatures) and this year I was a few weeks ahead of myself and began my big spring clean back in August, when the weather was teasing us telling us Spring was nearly here. I tend to do a major declutter 2-3 times a year where I get rid of all my accumulated junk, reorganise all of my drawers and cupboards – only to have hubby and kids mess them up again – and mix up my home decor to suit the upcoming season. It feels so good to have clean cupboards with everything in its place. We donate a lot of our unwanted items to our local hospice shop, or sell the big items online to make money to freshen things up with new goodies.
Today the house is feeling Springy and fresh. I have gone through and put life back into our home. Isn’t it funny that winter is all about rugging up, closing the house up and making things a bit dark and moody, whereas the moment the temperatures begin to rise and the sun starts shining through the windows a bit longer in the evenings, we get excited about stripping down those layers, opening up those windows and doors and bringing life and air back into the home.
I thought I would share with you how I mix things up each season so that our home feels like the season it is. That sounds weird I know, But when you are in winter you want to feel warm and cozy; using thick chunky knits and throws helps give you this feel. In Summer you want it to feel light, bright and breezy; soft tones, flowers and lots of light help us make this a reality. Like with most things we do around here mixing up the decor has to be done on a tight budget, so I will share some of my tips and bargain finds so you can freshen up your place for summer too without breaking the bank!
I found the most gorgeous home decor pieces to add to our living spaces from Farmers’ new season range. I was so excited by these beautiful on-trend pieces that matched not only our current decor style but also with our small budget. I tend to always see things online that I could only dream of buying on our tight budget, but I found some AMAZING pieces that aren’t just about looks, but are functional too which is a win win!
Nothing says spring like fresh blooms, and they aren’t just for in your garden! I stocked up on some beautiful new vases in all shapes and styles so that I have no excuse not to have flowers in my home all summer long.
The fish bowl vase seems to have made a comeback in recent months. I was so inspired by my flowers and new vases that, on our walk this morning, I went foraging and made my own flower arrangement which I think looks pretty damn good even if I do say so myself. Again you don’t need to spend a fortune to have beautiful things. Some free flowers (thanks neighbours) and a beautiful fish bowl vase and you are on trend and your home is that one step closer to looking like one of those dreamboat homes you see online!
I added more wooden tones and glass throughout my kitchen to add a summery, fresh feel to it. I got one new statement piece for my kitchen to complement some of my existing decor pieces – the wooden cookbook holder and it has to be one of my absolute favourite purchases, both for looks and practicality! It is an item that I have always wanted, but I have never been able to find one that doesn’t look cheap and plasticy. As you can tell I am all about throwing in wooden elements throughout my home and this wooden cookbook stand is another beautiful wooden touch.
It is easy to soften up the look and feel of a room by adding in light, soft textures. A new tea towel which costs peanuts is a cheap and easy way to do so in a space like the kitchen. Bringing colour into the room by adding flowers is one way, but a really simple way in the kitchen is by utilising what you have. I have a lemon tree that is laden with juicy ripe lemons. Throwing them in a simple white bowl adds an instant summery feel to a room.
As I mentioned before I wanted to add in wooden and glass elements this spring, this include the best-looking diffuser I have ever seen! If you follow me you know that I like to find unique pieces and to keep things a bit different to every Tom, Dick and Harry where I can while still staying on trend. Well I tell you, the moment I saw this diffuser it was in my trolley, even better it comes in Vanilla!
My entrance got a new lease on life with only two simple new additions! Yes, another vase (you can never have too many vases, right?!) and some greenery (again, you can never have too much greenery!). I love that this space looks perfect now…and because those gorgeous green Delicious Monster leaves won’t be dying on me anytime soon it will look perfect for months to come.
To recap on some simple, cheap and easy ways to freshen up your look here are my top tips for springing into summer:
-
Spring clean and declutter – you will be surprised how much stuff you have accumulated!
-
Utitlise what you have – dig out your vases, candles and other decor pieces you haven’t used in a while.
-
Use fresh flowers – even if they are foraged from your neighbours garden!!
-
Mix up your textures – away with the wintery throws, bring in some fresh textures.
-
Bring in some colour – this can be with cushions and throws or even fruit and flowers.
-
Choose a few simple new collection pieces – You don’t need to buy an entire shop’s new summer range. Pick your favourites that will tie into your existing decor.
