Every year when that school stationery list arrives I get mixed emotions! I do love me some good stationery, and personally actually really enjoy stationery shopping. I even enjoy covering Kylan’s book in Duraceal so that his are easy to spot from all his class mates and I find it also keeps the books in much better condition throughout the year, as let’s be honest kids, especially young boys aren’t exactly gentle with their things and books aren’t an exception!
But when it comes to actually covering the books it’s always been a bit hit and miss with me! One book will look like it was done by a Duracel professional! Whilst others….lets just say they looked more like I covered them in bubble wrap!!
Until I discovered my secret weapon, now it looks like all his books have been covered by a book covering professional! No need for those easy covers which yes are easy but also expensive and don’t stay on for long with these rough boys who shove the books down into their bags where they are met with old bananas and leaking drink bottles as putting it in the book bag which we had to buy for all the books is just far too difficult! (Please tell me it’s not just my son?)
So I thought I would give you my tips and my duracelling technique! It’s these little things in life that really make a difference!
1. Don’t let your kids use the Duraceal rolls as weapons! It creates creases in the roll which make covering the books more difficult and prone to bubbles.
2. Get all your supplies out and ready to nail it! Kylan chose the sparkly Duraceal from The Warehouse which is where we got all of his books and supplies. It was a one stop shop where we managed to get everything on his list and it all cost less that’s what it was going to cost if we had ordered through the school…BONUS!
3. Enter the secret weapon
A ruler…yes just a ruler! Now I use my handy flexi ruler but I’m sure any ruler will do the job!
4. So what I do is measure the size of the paper I need and cut it to size. Then I peel along the edge by about 2-3cm and put either the front or back cover edge against it. I tend to start with the back in case there are any slight creases as I find the second side I cover is always the best so we save that for the front!
Once I have the edge stuck on the Duraceal straight I enter my secret weapon! I lay the ruler on it and push! Easy as that! Sometimes I need to give the backing paper a little pull to help with one hand as I push with the other but most of the time I can just firmly push and it peels itself. If any bubbles appear I simply stop and work them out with the ruler towards the end of the paper. When one side is done I stop and turn it over and cut and dold over the edges around the book. Then I turn the book over and do the other side and work out any bubbles which appear.
And there you have it! My secret weapon is no longer a big secret! Hopefully your lives will be changed for the better and your kids will have the best looking books in the class!
