After getting a taste of styling a party from our engagement I thought I would go all out for Kylan’s third birthday party….And I enjoyed every minute!
Kylan chose the theme this year. He was old enough to explain to me what type of party he wanted and it basically was a no brainer as his FAVOURITE things at the time were DINOSAURS.
Not only did he love dinosaurs his knowledge on the subject was unbelievable! He could rattle off the names of all the dinosaurs including whether or not they were carnivore or herbivore and what they ate and special attributes that they had. Lets just say that I had to do a fair bit of reading to keep up and answer all his questions as I didn’t know the first thing about dinosaurs to begin with!
These kids sure keep us on our toes!!
ANYWAY back to the PARTY!!!
As I said I kinda got carried away and went all out! Of course Pinterest was the main culprit in making me do it!
First was the theme – We went with orange and blue. Kylan had a got a whole lot of Dinosaur Train toys for Christmas so they were the starting point for my inspiration and the rest just flowed from there!
Blue and Orange balloons at the bottom of the driveway |
Dinosaur footprints up the driveway to the front door |
The footprints were such a cheap and easy way to get the theme of the party started before the kids even got to the door. It created so much excitement amongst them when they arrived at the foot of the driveway.
So obviously with a Dinosaur themed birthday party I HAD to create a Dinosaur birthday cake! and what better way to carry through the theme than to create an orange and blue one!
This little dude had so much character in his little face. |
Of course as always I ran into a few bumps along the way with my cake. With this one it was again to do with the heat and the humidity. I could not for the life of me get his neck to stay up. When I tried using dowel, the fondant would melt down and the stick would poke through. I ended up using some piping and it worked a treat. One long straight neck and it lasted the entire party!!
And what party isn’t complete without cupcakes??? These were chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate butter cream icing and topped with fondant dinosaurs. And as it was a dinosaur party they could not be seen sitting in a pretty white cupcake stand….so grass was added for their comfort.
The kids table was set up outside as it was a gorgeous day and I had so much fun styling it! so much food colouring and sugar! A kids dream!!
Another pinterest inspiration – chocolate and sprinkle dipped marshmallows! So simple yet effective….and TASTY! |
I make dinosaur gingerbread cookies and decorated them using a sugar glaze icing. I did really enjoy making these! |
Kylan’s toy dinosaurs just finished off the table setting! |
Kylan got some cuddles from his little girlfriend at the end of the party. And as usual the birthday cake was a big hit!
Kylan had so much fun on his birthday but was a bit grumpy for no reason. He woke up the next morning with chicken pox! That sure did explain his mood. I then had to call all the parents of the kiddies to let them know that Kylan was most likely contaminating their kids at his party…..Nobody else caught it from him, thank goodness!
